Makeup Technology in Review 2012

January Top Picks - Life of Elle Calgary

Happy New Year my fellow readers!
Hope that your holidays are treating you well!

Last year we saw the introduction of  BB Cream to the Western World, the reinvention of tinted moisturizer, matte nail colors, nail wraps, lip temporary tattoos, and a new love for the lip stain. It’s going to be exciting to see what 2013 brings us!

For now though, let us look at some of the interesting breakthroughs that the past year has brought us – it seems that most of the biggest breakthroughs of 2012 had to do with foundations.

Estee Lauder Invisible Fluid Makeup

Using a technological breakthrough called IntuiTone™ technology, this foundation promises to not to “shift in tone”. Made to last long and feel like nothing on your face (it’s actually infused with air), it has received a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

I personally haven’t given it a try and cannot speak for its rave reviews but its innovation warrants a mention at least.

When I say a “shift in tone”…
Have you ever worn makeup that seems to change during the seasons – getting either too light or too dark during the winter and summer months?  Well, that’s what this product does, which is why it is so innovative!

From looking at reviews online, the color range for skin tones isn’t great. A lot of people are having troubles getting the right match, however, many people have raved about the feel of this on their skin and how light and airy it looks when on. That’s also something that one should be aware of when buying this product.

It’s a very light coverage. So, if you’re looking to cover dark spots or imperfections on the skin, this will not do that. It’s not a foundation for everyone. So, research and obtaining samples may be a good way to go.

Romi Digital Foundation

With technology becoming more and more prevalent and consumers being encouraged to rely more and more on that technology, it’s only logical that technology would eventually start invading the world of makeup.  Well, here it is: the Romi gives you flawless looking skin with its digital foundation applicator.

It comes with foundation, puffs, and the machine, but it isn’t found in shops.  At the moment, this interesting gadget is only available online. This little contraption is certainly something I’d try out at least once, however I am skeptical about its ability to apply foundation better than a human.  Why: that would replace my job!

In all seriousness, I’m always up for trying something out at least once.  It’s interesting that this product claims to apply faster and with more accuracy, which is why I find it an innovative piece of technology for 2012.

As for reviews of this product, I actually couldn’t find any other than one which gave a very honest opinion on the product!  There are certainly some problems with purchasing this piece of technology, such as replacing the sponges and the cartridges, as well as having to rely on the foundations they provide (which are again self adjusting).  This isn’t a bad thing necessarily, but if they don’t look right on the skin, you’ve purchased a product that you can’t really use.

Top Styler

Revolutionary and intriguing, this hair curling system is definitely something I would want in my own arsenal.

Giving you tight or loose curls in moments with just a twist and clip, I’m actually surprised that the Top Styler isn’t out in retail stores across the world yet. They can be bought online and include a bunch of extra stuff, which does give it that feel of one of those TV infomercial products.

I still think, if it’s as easy as they say it is, it’d be totally worth it.  This product in particular is certainly something I would consider investing my money in.

Reviews have been mixed about this product.  Many say it’s difficult to use, some have said the product breaks easily, but others says it’s easy to use and they would never use anything else.  So until I try this out for myself, I’m unsure what to make of it.  It’s a creative and unique tool, that’s for sure!

GlamNatural Hydrating Foundation

Patent pending, this unique foundation uses adjusting makeup to match your perfect skin tone.  This is certainly a technology we saw burst forth this year from more than one brand, as you saw from the Estee Lauder product above. Color shifting technology seems to be the way to go for that perfect match.

GlamNatural is concentrated and contains no water.  What’s interesting about this particular product is that its ingredient list is surprisingly short for such a complicated foundation. A little goes a long way and you are able to blend it easily as it “melts like butter to your face”. Sounds delicious to me. It is a bit highly priced for a foundation, however, if it does what they claim, this foundation should last you a very long time.

What is interesting about this in comparison to the Estee Lauder brand is that this one is practically all natural, exactly as it says on the bottle.  I’d like to see how this compares to products that have a huge list of ingredients. If it is better, why on earth am I spending money on chemicals when I can have this gem?

There were very few reviews on this product but the ones that I found were raving about it.  I wasn’t aware that this product was also Vegan friendly!  The only problem most people have is deciding what shade to choose as one cannot simply go to a retailer store to buy this.  Purchasing online has always had a downside because of this.  I think it’s safe to assume that pale is really pale and Bronze 2 is really dark.  Thus, choose one that’s a shade closest to your color or lighter if you’re really unsure.

Giorgio Armani Maestro Fusion Foundation

With a patented Fusion Technology, Georgio Armani created a foundation that delivers the thinnest color film, which then blends and corrects skin imperfections … with no caking. Sounds like a dream come true to me, however, I haven’t been able to test it myself.

Apparently, all you need are three drops and the foundation will feel like it’s not even there. I would want to sample this one first before buying a full bottle.

There has been hype as well as hate about this product, so like the Estee Lauder product, I think it’s a “not for everyone” kind of product.  It has an amazing feel, no one disputes this, however it flakes on some skin types and is very sheer. So if you’re looking for coverage, this is not the product for you.  There is little complaint about color matching and overall the ratings are very favorable. My interest in obtaining a sample and trying it for myself is certainly piqued.
